In 1968 UNESCO officially endorsed the ISIC card, recognizing it as a unique document encouraging cultural exchange and international understanding. The UNESCO logo has also appeared on the card since 1993 following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding, which was renewed in 1999, aimed at promoting young people's access to mobility and to a variety of educational and cultural experiences. This aim still stands strong today.

In addition to the global UNESCO endorsement of the ISIC card, a number of local UNESCO chapters have recently initiated local agreements and endorsements of the card.
The decision to create the ISIC card was an initiative of the Norwegian and Dutch Union of Students, supported by the Coordinating Secretariat of National Unions of Students (COSEC) of Denmark, at the 3rd International Student Conference where the decision was made to “take the necessary steps to ensure that an International Student Identity Card be made available as soon as possible in as large a part of the world as possible.”

Originally the ISIC card was a student identity card that gave fulltime students world access to special discounted airfares. In order to get discounted airfares students bought an ISIC card allowing cardholders to explore the world and discover new countries and cultures.

This supported the ISIC card’s pioneering mission statement: “Increasing international understanding through the promotion of travel and exchange opportunities among students, young people and the academic community.”

2013 marked the 60th Anniversary of the International Student Identity Card (ISIC). To find out more, watch this short video featuring interviews with key people central to the ISIC card’s significant milestones in the past and present, and providing a snapshot of the promising future ahead for ISIC cardholders.

A change in focus

ISIC continues to be the only internationally recognised proof of student status. However, the growth of discounted airfares online has changed the ISIC card focus. The availability of cheap online flights has led to the decrease in ISIC card sales in the new millennium for simply travel related purposes. Today, the portfolio of benefits and discounts accessible with the ISIC card goes far beyond travel alone. The ISIC card is now also an everyday use student lifestyle card. Cardholders still enjoy discounts and services on travel opportunities. On top of that, students gain preferential access to over 42,000 products, services or experiences in every stage and area of student life, both at home and abroad.
The temples were built to honour the Pharaoh and the Egyptian Gods.
This is not just an afternoon hike up Table Mountain; Mount Kilimanjaro (Kili as it is affectionately known) is the highest mountain in Africa, and at 19340ft its not surprising that summiting this impressive mound is a difficult and sometimes grueling task. The highest peak, Uhuru, can be reached by those with a moderate to high level of fitness, and if you can summit you’ll be able to say you reached the point of the tallest free-standing mountain in the world.

The thousands of tones of water gushing downwards is the site of the “largest curtain of falling water on the earth”. Victoria Falls is a grandiose waterfall on the Zambezi River at the Zimbabwean-Zambian border. The “Mosi-oa-Tunya” (smoke that thunders) columns of water spray can be seen from miles away and the sound elaborates to visitors just how powerful the water-flow is. On the Zambian side there are relatively-safe natural pools to swim in so don’t forget to bring your costume (and your camera of course).

The Egyptians have such a rich and decadent cultural history, and the Pyramids are an important cornerstone in that regard. The triangular architecture of the Pyramids has become the icon most famously synonymous with Egypt, and most of them (there are over 100) were built as tombs to preserve the mummies of Pharaohs and their family-members.

After the Grand Canyon of America, the Namibian site of the Fish River Canyon is the most spectacular in the world. With a 160km ravine which measures at about 27km wide and 550 metres deep in some places the Fish River flows in the belly of this giant spectacle. Arguably one of the most amazing natural events in the world, the Wildebeest Migration is an impressive movement to witness. The migration takes place among the open plains as hundreds of thousands of the magnificent wildebeest and zebra move towards greener pastures. The mass movement is a tense journey for the herbivores as they are followed closely by various predators hoping to benefit from the stragglers’ weaknesses.

In the late 1970s, the Khmer Rough used Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, known then as Pol Pot's Prison, as a detention and torture centre. Out of the approximately 17,000 people who entered the complex, only a handful of them were known to have emerged alive.

So what exactly about this museum will send shivers down your spine?

The museum has been kept exactly the way it was in the 1970s, though it thankfully lacks the live graphic horror. Here you'll find skulls, pictures of former detainees and some torture paintings. It's rumored (of course) that the spirits of those who died there still haunt the museum.
What's better than a haunted house? A haunted city.

The ruins of Bhangarh Fort in Rajasthan, India are known as one of the most haunted places in the country. The warning signs located at the fort's entry points forbidding people from "Entering the borders of Bhangarh before sunrise and after sunset" only re-enforce the rumours.
There are a number of myths as to why the city was abandoned almost overnight, and never re-inhabited, but almost all of them conclude that it's due to a curse (although there are disagreements as to who put it there), and that ghosts now haunt the city.

One popular story goes that a magician, Singha Serva wanted to marry the fort's Princess Ratnavati, and when she foiled his plot to seduce her, he cursed the fort and all its inhabitants.
If you're skeptical about the existence of ghosts, trying spending your Halloween at Lipe Island in Thailand's southern Andaman Sea, and you might just become a believer.

Despite of the presence of a thriving modern tourist industry, the locals (known as Chao-le people) still take ghosts very seriously - they are, after all, neighbors.

Ask a resident if he's seen a ha-too recently (the Chao-le word for "ghost"), and he'll tell you he's seen many on the island - sometimes too many. Not only a belief held by the older generation, Chao-le kids are regularly seen tracking ghost prints left in the sand.
Located in a rocky region just beyond Tokyo's bright lights is one of most haunted places in Japan: Himuro Mansion (sometimes referred to as Himikyru Mansion).

The complex is rumoured to be the home to one of the most gruesome murders in modern Japanese history. The members of the Himuro family, who were is said to be involved in their own dark rituals, were killed by their housemaster, who then in turn fell on his own blade.

Although the murders supposedly took place almost eight decades ago, stories still circulate that the family's spirits wander the grounds, and that fresh blood can often be seen on the walls.

A 90-minute drive north of downtown Chiayi stands Minsyong Haunted House (built in 1929), a mini tourist attraction for souls looking for a scare.

Although there are a number of conflicting tails as to why the now derelict mansion is haunted: all accounts agree that something isn't quite right there.

Some believe a maid who died in the mansion's well still roams the grounds, while others support the theory that the spirits of dead Japanese soldiers who lived near the mansion during World War II have taken up residence there. If you're in the mood to travel this Halloween, find out who's right for yourself.
